Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC) provide electrician apprenticeship programs that offer pathways into various careers in the field. You can join our programs, get paid on-the-job training, and take an exam for your license. We train thousands of apprentices through multiple centers and offer opportunities to train under a licensed contractor while getting paid.

Our Apprenticeship Programs

The Department of Labor and Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training approve our electrician apprenticeship programs. IEC programs include Standard Electrician Apprentice, Modified Residential Electrical Specialist, and Live Online Training. The 4-year Standard Electrician Apprenticeship is our primary program, featuring at least 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. You’ll also complete a minimum of 576 hours of technical instruction.

The Modified Residential Electrical Specialist program offers 4,000 hours of paid on-the-job training and 288 hours of technical instruction. Live Online Apprenticeship Training uses web-based programs, live demonstrations, real-time questions, VoIPs, and other online learning tools. One advantage of our apprenticeship programs is earning while you learn. You’ll also get college credit for the training and can take an exam for a journeyman’s license.

Earning on the Job

At IEC, we design the training to provide hands-on skills for the job, which requires many hours of practical work. The apprenticeship programs feature on-the-job training with a contractor during the day, where you can work on exciting projects. You’ll earn great wages while training and only need to attend evening classes two nights per week. The classes feature leading professional instructors who guide you on the best electrical curriculum.

IEC has many electrical contractor members in the Greater Cincinnati Area. Our contractor members offer ample job opportunities once you have a license, so you can get a full-time job. You’ll also get paid for your input during the field trips with the contractor. Learning on the job involves real-life projects that contractors are hired to do. Apprentices encounter the same challenges they’ll face once they become licensed electricians.

How To Start Earning

IEC’s top-notch electrical curriculum and hands-on, on-the-job training allow you to successfully launch your electrician career. Apprentices also get an opportunity to earn wages while learning. To join the program, you must apply at your local IEC chapter office. Requirements vary from chapter to chapter, but all require filling out the application, submitting requested paperwork, and paying a registration fee.

You need a high school diploma or GED, unless you’re a youth apprentice. IEC also requires applicants to pass a math assessment test and a reading test in some locations. Consider getting a driver’s license to help you travel between classes and job sites. Once approved, the chapter office can help you secure an apprentice position with an IEC contractor member. The Apprenticeship and Training Committee determines your wages.
